Copper wire and leather

The inception of this work was thinking about a musical performer with stage fright who wears a specially designed hat with a wide brim that can be bent down to cover the face and can be opened up as they feel more comfortable.
From there, I considered a gum leaf inspired brim with flexible wire for the frame. I used the gum leaf for it’s long and narrow shape and this work is a model of the hat using craft wire and scrap leather pieces.
I enjoyed the process of making this work as it is like drawing in 3D and presents interesting challenges and problems to solve. It has prompted me to increase my knowledge of the properties of available materials and develop skills in producing larger more detailed sculpture. I am currently developing a wearable version of the hat using some basic millinery practices.
